By the mid-century, fraternities and sororities had become a central fixture in American college social life, often controlling the party scene, housing networks, and alumni pipelines.

The Locus of Hazing and Sexual Assault

Data show hazing is not a rare prank but a recurring system. Social pressure reinforces the cycle, with pledges frequently convinced that enduring humiliation or danger is the price of admission into a lifelong network. Attempts to reform the system often fail because they treat hazing as a behavior problem rather than a structural feature of selective, secretive organizations that thrive on shared adversity and insider status. In this way, hazing becomes a cultural glue, binding generations together and resisting outside intervention.

The Revolving Door of Probation

Many fraternities and sororities are repeat offenders, moving through a cycle of probation, reinstatement, and relapse. National headlines regularly feature chapters suspended for hazing, alcohol violations, or sexual misconduct, only for those identical houses to reopen and repeat the same behaviors within a few years. At Penn State, the death of Timothy Piazza led to dozens of sanctions, yet multiple fraternities have since been cited for hazing or alcohol abuse.

Louisiana State University, Florida State, and the University of Iowa have all conducted sweeping Greek life suspensions after student deaths, only to watch violations return almost immediately after reinstatement. The pattern is predictable: a tragedy occurs, the university suspends the chapter or even the entire Greek system, mandatory training and risk education are rolled out, and then the same chapters or their peers resume the same dangerous rituals. The probation model has become little more than a public relations tool to buy time until the headlines fade.

The Benefits Are Overstated

Defenders claim fraternities and sororities build leadership skills, boost GPAs, and raise money for charity. Some of this is true, but none of it is unique to the Greek system. You can run a service club, join a student government, or live in a themed residential hall and get all those same benefits without hazing deaths or sexual assault risks. The secrecy, selective membership, and off-campus culture are what make the system so resistant to reform.

Rising or Declining

The picture is mixed. At SEC schools and some large flagships, recruitment thrives thanks to viral RushTok attention. At elite colleges and northern schools, membership has dropped by double digits since the mid-2010s, and several campuses have abolished fraternities entirely. With nationwide enrollment projected to shrink, struggling chapters face closure or consolidation. The Greek system’s grip is loosening outside its strongholds.

Why Abolition Is the Right Move

Greek life is not simply a set of clubs that need better rules; it is a complex system that requires a comprehensive approach. Its design of secrecy, pledging, and selective power structures creates the conditions for hazing and assault. Federal reporting laws will bring transparency, but that is not enough. Universities should retire the model and replace it with open, accountable communities where leadership, networking, and philanthropy are possible without the collateral damage.

Most parents drop their kids off at college, assuming they are headed to a safe bubble of academia. The numbers tell a different story. Suppose you compare the data on mortality, assault, sexual violence, and mental health crises for college students with the risks of living in places like Chicago or New York. In that case, you find that campus life carries risks that rival those of some of America’s so-called “high crime” cities, just in a different flavor. The myth of the ivory tower as a sanctuary collapses quickly once you dig into the numbers.

Start with mortality. The best U.S. study on causes of death among college students found accident rates at roughly 10.8 per 100,000, suicide rates at 6.17 per 100,000, and homicide at 0.53 per 100,000. On a raw death-by-violence basis, this is far lower than Chicago’s homicide rate, which hovers near 30 per 100,000 in its most violent neighborhoods. So if the only question is “Will you be murdered?”, college looks relatively safe. However, that metric overlooks the real hazards students face daily, hazards that rarely make headlines but can be life-changing or even life-ending.

Criminal victimization on campus is pervasive. In 2021, there were over 31,000 reported crimes on U.S. campuses, approximately 16.9 incidents per 10,000 students. This figure only represents the reported crimes. Forcible sexual offenses more than tripled from 2011 to 2021, rising from 2.2 to 7.5 per 10,000 students. That means that for every 10,000 students on campus, roughly 75 will report a sexual assault during the academic year. Since research suggests most assaults go unreported, the real number could be double or triple that. That is not just dangerous; that is an epidemic.

Based on the best available data, a female college student faces roughly a 1 in 5chance of experiencing some form of sexual assault during her time in college, while the rate for male students is lower but still significant at about one in sixteen. These numbers include a range of incidents from unwanted sexual contact to assault involving physical force or incapacitation, and likely understate the actual risk because most assaults go unreported to authorities or institutions. In other words, the likelihood of sexual assault during the college years is high enough to be considered one of the defining safety issues of campus life.

Add alcohol to the mix, and the danger level spikes. Federal studies estimate that about 1,500 college students die annually from alcohol related injuries, including car crashes. Tens of thousands more are injured, assaulted, or find themselves in ERs for alcohol poisoning. You are statistically more likely to be a victim of crime in college than while living in many large American cities, the assaults just take place at fraternity parties and off-campus apartments instead of on street corners.

Mental health risk completes the grim picture. Surveys regularly find that between 15 and 20 percent of students report suicidal thoughts, with nearly 1 in 5 admitting to self-harm. That is not merely a stressful period of life; it is a public health crisis hiding in plain sight. Suicide is consistently among the top three causes of death for college students, trailing only accidents and occasionally illness. Compare that to city data: while crime grabs the headlines, the average urban resident is statistically less likely to attempt suicide than the average college sophomore.

Even if we strip out the non-fatal harm and look just at exposure to dangerous situations, the contrast is revealing. In big cities, crime risk is highly concentrated: live outside a handful of violent neighborhoods and your personal risk drops dramatically. Colleges, by contrast, concentrate young, inexperienced, and often intoxicated people in dense housing with limited security. A single stormy night, a hazing ritual gone wrong, a drunk driver leaving a football game, a violent assault in a dorm, can alter a student’s life permanently.

Is college more dangerous than living in a high-crime metro? If your definition of danger is strictly violent death, probably not. But if your definition includes sexual assault, aggravated assault, theft, serious injury, mental health breakdowns, and risk behaviors that can follow you for years, then yes, college is objectively dangerous. And the danger is systemic, baked into the culture of late nights, binge drinking, loose oversight, and the social churn of young adults learning adulthood the hard way.

The lesson is not to panic, but to be realistic. Parents and students should treat campus safety with the same seriousness they would treat moving to an urban apartment: walk with friends at night, know the reporting systems, use campus escorts, moderate alcohol use, and demand that universities back up their glossy brochures with real investment in mental health services and security. A student heading off to college may not be moving to a high-crime ZIP code, but they are walking into a statistically dangerous environment. Pretending otherwise does not keep anyone safer.

Christianity started as a small, persecuted sect of Judaism that preached a kingdom where the last would be first. As it grows, the religion spreads across new communities and social classes, eventually building institutions to protect its teachings and regulate its life. This period is full of missionary zeal and often results in the faith becoming a moral and cultural force that can even merge with state power.

Eventually, the bureaucratic machinery of a mature religion replaces the raw zeal that fueled its spread. As traditions harden, the religion becomes culturally dominant, and its teachings may be more assumed than passionately embraced. This is when reformers rise to recapture the fire of the early days and sometimes break off into new denominations or movements. If renewal fails, participation declines, belief becomes more symbolic than transformative, and the religion becomes a cultural artifact more than a living force.

Christianity has already gone through this cycle several times in different regions. In its first centuries, it was countercultural and often persecuted. After Constantine, it became the faith of the empire and eventually the official religion of the European continent. The Middle Ages were an era of dominance for the church, during which it exerted significant influence over politics, law, and culture.

The Reformation was an enormous splintering, but also a renewal that gave it fresh life. The modern period saw Christianity spread globally through missionary efforts tied to colonialism. The twentieth century brought explosive growth in Africa, Latin America, and parts of Asia, but the first signs of decline were already evident in Europe and North America.

Today, the data from the developed world is difficult to ignore. Pew Research surveys show that in the United States, the percentage of adults who identify as Christian fell from roughly 78 percent in 2007 to about 63 percent in 2021, while the number of religiously unaffiliated rose quickly. Church attendance is down, especially among Millennials and Generation Z. In Europe, the shift is even more dramatic.

Regular church attendance in the United Kingdom is now below 5 percent, and countries such as France and the Czech Republic report majority nonreligious populations. These numbers suggest that Christianity in the developed West is at a late institutional stage and entering a period of decline as a cultural force.

The question is whether this is the final stage or another point in a repeating cycle of renewal. History suggests that Christianity has the capacity to regenerate itself. Monasticism revived medieval faith, Pietism and Methodism sparked evangelical fervor, and Pentecostalism set off a wave of revival in the twentieth century.

Some scholars argue that Western Christianity may be entering a smaller but more vibrant phase, where cultural Christianity gives way to small, committed communities that focus on discipleship rather than social influence. Others think the long trend toward secularization will continue and Christianity will become a minority faith in formerly Christian nations.

Globally, Christianity is not disappearing; instead, it is shifting its center of gravity. By 2050, the majority of Christians are expected to reside in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. This demographic shift will shape theology, liturgy, and politics in ways that will no longer be dominated by European or North American culture. Christianity may still be a major world religion in the twenty-second century, but its face will be African and Latin American rather than Western.

Christianity in the developed world is at a crossroads somewhere between late maturity and early decline. Whether it fades into cultural memory, like the gods of Greece and Rome, or experiences another renewal, will depend on whether it can adapt to a postmodern, pluralistic society. Even James Bond has taken on Russian crime syndicates, sometimes blurring the line between organized crime and leftover KGB apparatchiks.

Foxy Brown (1974) transformed Pam Grier into the defining heroine of the genre as she pursued mobsters with style and fury. Coffy (1973) gave us more Grier glory, this time with a sawed-off shotgun and a vendetta against heroin pushers and dirty cops. Black Caesar (1973) starred Fred Williamson in a rise-and-fall gangster saga that gave Harlem its own version of The Godfather. Blacula (1972) blended Gothic horror and social commentary with a Black vampire protagonist, becoming an unlikely cult classic.

Blaxploitation was both liberating and controversial. The core audience was young, urban, and Black, but the films quickly gained traction with white counterculture audiences who appreciated their rawness, defiance, and gritty energy. For many white viewers, Blaxploitation movies were a peek into a world they had only seen in headlines about riots and rising crime rates, and they could not look away.

And what about those giant orders where the math suddenly suggests a tip that looks more like a second entrée?

The traditional answer is the percentage model. Just as in a sit-down restaurant, many people tip their driver around 15 to 20 percent of the total order amount. This approach feels fair on the surface. It is simple, it is familiar, and most delivery apps nudge customers toward it by presenting percentage-based options at checkout. Drivers certainly benefit from this model because it scales upward on expensive orders. If you ordered a $200 meal, the driver might pocket $30 or $40 before they even get back in the car.

The confessional is more than a set piece. It is a metaphor for the tension between privacy and exposure, between shame and redemption, between what we hide and what we can no longer keep inside.

The cinematic confessional has its roots in Catholic iconography. Alfred Hitchcock’s I Confess (1953) is a notable early example, in which Montgomery Clift plays a priest who, after a murderer confesses to his crime, is trapped by the seal of the confessional. The box becomes both prison and pulpit, locking the priest in silence while the audience seethes with the knowledge of a secret that cannot be shared. Elsewhere, thrillers employ false confessions to deepen suspense, turning a place of honesty into a stage for manipulation. This subversion keeps the trope fresh. A confessional may promise truth, but in cinema, it just as often conceals lies.

Confession offers catharsis. For the penitent, it is a release of guilt. For audiences, it is a dramatic unveiling. The aesthetics reinforce the psychology: the tight space, the lattice screen, the dim lighting; all suggest secrecy, shame, and the dangerous act of partial revelation. Even when transposed into interrogation rooms or whispered late-night conversations, filmmakers mimic these aesthetics. Isolation, dim light, and a sense of ritual transform the act of speaking into something weighty and dangerous.

The confessional survives because it is efficient. In one scene, a director can deliver exposition, reveal psychology, and heighten suspense.
